Russian Orthodox Patriarch Alexiy II Died Dec 5


Head of Russian Orthodox Church, Patriarch Alexiy II of Moscow and All Russia has died this morning in the Moscow Region’s Peredelkino residence, RBC reported citing the news service of Moscow Patriarchate.
The Church hasn’t commented on the death of Alexiy II. Presumably, it was caused by the heart attack. Besides, the patriarch was suffering from cancer, according to the sources.

On December 4, Patriarch Alexiy II officiated at the service in Moscow Kremlin’s Uspensky Cathedral. He congratulated all Christians with the start of the Advent, saying he wished it would be the time of spiritual growth, the time of testing the course of life to prepare for the Christmas celebration with dignity.

Patriarch of Moscow and of All-Russia and the primate of the Russian Orthodox Church, Alexiy II (Alexei Rediger) was born February 23, 1929 in Estonia’s capital Tallinn. His father Mikhail was the priest at Tallinn Orthodox Church and chaired the Diocesan Council.

Alexei Rediger became a deacon in 1950 and was soon consecrated a priest.

He was Metropolitan of Novgorod and Leningrad from 1986 until his election as Patriarch. After the death of Patriarch Pimen I in 1990 Alexiy was chosen to become the new Patriarch of The Russian Orthodox Church

Alexiy II led Russian Orthodox Church towards the major religious revival in the country and towards the unification with the Russian Orthodox Church Outside Russia. Lots of churches were opened in his time.

The Holy Synod of Russian Orthodox Church convenes an extraordinary sitting in Moscow December 6. The members of the Synod that are in Moscow now will meet already today.

Alexiy II was the 15th Patriarch of Moscow and of All-Russia and the primate of the Russian Orthodox Church. Led by the olderst hierarch of Russia’s Orthodox Church, Metropolitan Vladimir of Kiev, the Church Council will elect a new patriarch no later than next May.

Metropolitan Yuvenaly of Krutitsy and Kolomna will independently lead Moscow Eparchy in the intervening months.
