MOSCOW, December 6 (Itar-Tass) -- Moscow weather on Saturday established an absolute December record in the history of meteorological observations -- 9.4 degrees Centigrade, the meteobureau for Moscow and the Moscow Region reported.
It happened overnight. The temperature at three o'clock rose to the mark of 9.4 degrees. Until the present, the maximum December temperature reached 9.2 degrees on December 15, 2006. It is 1.7 degrees higher than the former record for December 6 -- 7.7 degrees -- set in 1898.
Over the past two days, the absolute maximum levels were exceeded twice in the capital.
South and southwestern winds brought the unusual warmth to central Russia from southern Europe.
The temperature of 9.4 degrees is not only record high for December, but also for Moscow winter, and it is expected to continue to rise. According to meteorologists, it may reach ten degrees later this Saturday.
Last Friday, the Mediterranean warmth renewed the former maximum air temperature records. It was 3.7 degrees in the Arkhangelsk Region's Kotlas. It was record warm in two cities in Komi -- 2.8 degrees in Syktyvkar and one degree in Ukhta, and it was very warm in Cherepovets -- 6.1 degrees.
Russia's central zone was not behind the north European region: in Smolensk it was as warm as in spring -- 8.9 degrees, the temperature was seven degrees in Tula, 8.6 degrees in Oryol (the former record was 7.4 in 1986). On December 5, it was 8.1 degrees in Kursk (7.6 in 1986), 9.9 in Bryansk (7.1 in 1960) and 4.7 in Tambov (the former maximum was 4.5 in 1964).
Cities in the Volga region also renewed their records -- 4.2 degrees in Kirov, 5.7 in Nizhny Novgorod, 5.2 in Ulyanovsk, 6.8 in Penza and 3.1 in Samara. The temperature was eleven degrees in Astrakhan, and it reached 20.5 degrees in Vladikavkaz.
