Judo Is a Philosophy, Says Putin
Oct. 07, 2008 is Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin’s 56th birthday. It is also the day of the premier of the long-awaited film in which the prime minister plays a leading role. Putin was present at the premier, which took place at the press center of Konstantinovsky Palace in St. Petersburg, and even gave a judo lesson there. Filming began on the video while Putin was still president of Russia.
Anatoly Rakhlin, Honored Trainer of Russia for judo and sambo (a purely Russian form of hand-to-hand combat), noted that Putin has had the makings of a sportsman since childhood, “mainly his fighting spirit,” he specified. The prime minister said he has been active in judo since the age of 13.
The film consists of four parts. In the first part, Putin talks briefly about the sources of judo and sambo. The second part is dedicated to the various methods of judo and sambo and, in the third and fourth parts, Japanese and Russian master sportsmen demonstrate those arts.
